The Crow Indian Tribe is located in the South Central part of Montana. A beautiful area surrounded by mountains and abounding in wild game. The Crow Tribe controlled the area from Three Forks on the West to the Black Hills on the East. South to the Big Horn mountains and North to the Musselshell. Annually the tribe made migrations within this area for cooler temperatures and summer grazing for the horse’s during the heat of the summer. During such a migrations a young nine year old crow youth left the tribe and journeyed to the highest peak in the Crazy Mountains to seek a vision. This young man later named “Plenty Coups” received a significant vision, a vision that would effect permanently the Crow Tribe. During his vision quest he was shown the demise of the buffalo and the coming of white mans cattle. He was told he would count many coups and would become the Chief of the Crows. He was counseled to manage the affairs of the tribe with wisdom not brawn. He was given the chickadee as a medicine animal to remind him that like the chickadee he should use intelligence and tact to secure that which would be best for his people. Plenty Coups was warned that the Crows must never fight the whites but work with them. In so doing they would be able to remain in their homeland. Plenty Coups rode the plains as a great warrior and was made the Chief of the Crows. By this authority he lead the tribe through the transition to reservation life with little conflict. Plenty Coups one of the great leaders of American history. |
